Considerations

With proper care, a tufted wool rug can provide many years of beauty. Its lifespan depends on usage and foot traffic. Each rug is handwoven, so small variations in size and colour may occur. These give every rug a unique character.

Unwrapping

Unwrap your rug as soon as you receive it. Rugs are packed tightly, and this can cause light pressure marks from the packaging. Unroll the rug, lay it flat, and leave it to settle for a few days. The yarns will open up and the marks should disappear. If they remain, smooth them by hand or vacuum gently in the direction of the pile (see Vacuuming). For knotted rugs, you may roll the rug tightly in the opposite direction for a couple of days to remove stubborn creases.

Sunlight

Rotate your rug frequently to ensure even wear and colour fading. Avoid placing it in strong, direct sunlight, as UV rays are the main cause of fading.

Moths

Moths can damage wool rugs. Vacuum regularly, especially along edges and hidden areas, to prevent infestation.

Furniture Placement

Heavy furniture can leave permanent pressure marks. Use furniture pads under the legs and rotate your rug occasionally to reduce pressure points.

Vacuuming

Vacuum your rug weekly to remove dust and extend its life. Avoid over-vacuuming, as this can wear fibres prematurely. Use a low suction setting and avoid the brush/beater bar or rotary brush nozzles, which can pull out yarns and cause “sprouts.” The handheld flat nozzle is ideal—vacuum in the direction of the pile. To identify the pile direction, stroke your hand across the rug: if it feels smooth, you’re going with the pile; if rough, you’re going against it. Avoid vacuuming continuously over the edges, as this may loosen fibres. You can also beat the rug’s back gently to release dust before vacuuming.

Loose Threads (Sprouting)

Sprouting is normal in handmade rugs and does not affect durability. If you notice raised yarns, trim them neatly with sharp scissors. Never pull them.

Underfloor Heating

Wool rugs are suitable for underfloor heating. Use a high-quality anti-slip underlay to prevent creasing and slipping. Ensure your heating operates within normal temperature ranges. If uncertain, consult your heating installer or manufacturer.

Spots & Spills

Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth and never rub. Use diluted pH-neutral soap or a mild mix of water and white vinegar, dabbing from the edge toward the centre. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals. If unsure, consult a professional cleaner with your rug’s material details.

Professional Cleaning

Have your rug professionally cleaned to remove deep dirt. Do not wash it yourself. Hand-knotted rugs: full submersion or dry/low-moisture cleaning. Hand-tufted rugs: dry or low-moisture cleaning only (avoid washing). Do not steam clean either type, and wait at least six months before the first professional cleaning. A textile protector can help prevent stains and extend the rug’s life.
